Lookout!” Santa grabbed Mikey’s collar just before he collided with a big-haired lady, holding at least half a dozen packages.
“Stranger! Stranger!” Mikey yelled, a look of terror on his little face.
He stared up at the man in the disguise and wiggled like a bug to get free. Heidi reached him a second after the stranger intervened.
“It’s okay, baby, Momma’s here. Momma’s here,” she soothed as she pulled him into her arms. She put on a brave front, but her heart thumped in her chest. Mikey fell into her arms, sobbing as shoppers wandered by, staring. Heidi ignored them. She’d grown accustomed to people staring long ago.
Mikey clutched at her, and she fought tears as she tried to calm him. It had been a bad couple of years, though she’d managed to shield Mikey from most of it. One more trauma and her little boy could completely shut down on her.
