“It’s not for sale.”
“Everything and everybody has a price. Name yours. Don’t be a fool like your old man. You’re only a woman. You can’t keep this spread up all alone. Why, you don’t even have any ranch hands.”
She tilted her chin upward. “Well, I intend to hire some soon.”
“Well, it’d sure be a shame if something happened, like your herd running off, or your house burning down.”
She gasped and stumbled backward. His words were like a bucket of cold water poured over her head.
“Are you threatening her?” Quinn’s hand went to his gun.
“Nope, just saying what could happen. You just never know. Anything can happen.”
“And if it does, I’ll come looking for you, with or without this badge, and it won’t be pretty. But just so you don’t get any ideas, Marissa can’t sell you this ranch.”
“And why not?”
“Because she doesn’t own it. I do.”
Marissa couldn’t believe her ears. Quinn owned her ranch? Her mind refused to grasp the idea. Darkness closed around her, and she slumped to the ground.
