Excerpt:

Amongst all the other travelers, I stood on the noisy, crowded platform for the 10:20 am train. The garbled voice of the announcer said something that might as well have been spoken in Hindu, for all the sense I could make of it through the crackling speaker.

Perhaps I should ring Sara again or my mother and say good-bye once more. Three weeks away is a long time, after all.

Mother thought I was crazy to go all the way to London with someone I'd only known a few months. She said the world had gone mad and no one courted properly anymore. I actually have the same opinion for the most part, yet Harry had tried to court me properly--when I let him. He wanted to wine and dine me, take me to the theatre and for drives in the country and I had agreed to some of it, but ... but I was frightened...

I had loved a man once, my husband, Sara's father. He had been the man of my dreams, the one I loved above all others. Then after ten wonderful years, he went. Gone. In one freak accident I was left a widow with a young child. All my love went with him.

Now, thirteen years later, I was being asked to feel things again--emotions that had been dead and buried with my husband. Truthfully, I didn't know if I was capable of being a lover, a partner once more.
