Excerpt:

“Change me,” she whispered, the words a gravelly wheeze.

Erik’s eyes widened, as if she had just looked into his most secret thoughts. “No, never.”

“You must…I have to write the book, right?” She coughed, blood spraying through her lips.

“No. I would rather the entire universe fall on its head than to fill you with this curse,” he said, but she could see him rationalizing in his mind.

“Please, Erik, don’t let me die. If you ever cared for me, you’ll do this for me.”

He leaned over her, his arms encircling her shoulders. “Angelica, you don’t know what you’re asking.”

She turned her ruined face away, his hot breaths searing against her cheek. “Please. Don’t let me die like this. I’m begging you.”

Anything. She would barter anything for another year…for another day. She would sell her very soul for more time.

His fingers dug into her arms. White explosions of pain sparked behind her eyes and she cried out. Sweat beaded across her forehead.

Erik’s tears burned her withered skin. Vampire tears. Blood tears.

“I can’t do this to you. I just can’t.” He wept, but his voice was a low growl. Already he had changed.
