Chapter One

“I assure you," Sarah whined haughtily, “I shall be the soul of kindness, I shall epitomize understanding, I shall... ”

“That is all very well,” Rebecca interrupted. She paused with her hands in the hot soapy dishwater and gazed very directly at her sister. “This is the all-important meeting, remember. This will establish your relationship with his mother for life: your whole life.”

“I absolutely do realize—”

Rebecca, most uncharacteristically, stomped her foot. “It is all very well to say, but what will you do? I heard you telling Audrey to air that taffeta and satin affair, the dress from the New York catalog store! It's a lunch you've been asked to, not dinner at the Savoy. You should dress simply and take along fresh cut flowers and nothing more.”

Sarah slammed a pot into the cupboard. “That gold outfit is hardly an evening dinner dress.”

“You know perfectly well what I mean, Sarah. Now forgive me for being blunt. I know I don't usually speak to you this way, but this is one case where I am not going to just stand by and watch disaster. You would never forgive yourself if you stalked in there wearing celebrity all over you and intimidated a nice simple old lady.” Rebecca pushed out her bottom lip and eyed her sister. “There isn't any reason you can't dress a bit more plainly and talk about things that everyday sorts of people will understand.”

“I find discussing my paintings is always a nice conversation starter,” Sarah snapped. “It's an uncommon enough practice for many to find a discussion interesting.”
