Oran, Algeria April 1943 Lieutenant Scott Murphy heard the air raid sirens but didn’t panic. These raids were becoming a regular nightly occurrence. He rose from his desk, glancing out the window to the north, where the German bombers usually came in from their Italian bases. Tonight, the sky was clear. “Come on, Scott, let’s get to the air raid shelter,” Lieutenant Jack Disprow said as he stuck his head into the office. “Go ahead. I just have to stow these charts. I’ll be along in a minute.” “Better hurry. They’re coming in from the west this time.” Jack ran on down the hall. Scott knew the antiaircraft guns were fewer in that direction, offering less protection, less chance the planes would be stopped before they could do their damage. Just as he glanced out the window again, the first bomb exploded, too close for his comfort. He figured he had only seconds before the next one could land on top of him. He hustled to the safe with his collection of charts, tide tables and latest intelligence reports and had just slammed the door on them when his world came crashing down around him.
