Excerpt:
With a shaking breath, Jozy flung the stage door open, lurched through the opening, onto the stage and raced down the three steps.
The crash of props from the stage room signaled the killer had entered the back room. She twisted her head to glance over her shoulder and stumbled. Recovering, she sped to the double doors. Escape. Jozy shoved through the doors and rounded the curve in the second floor. Footsteps pounded on the stairs above. Her heart slammed against her chest.
Exerting all her energy, she raced down the last flight of stairs. Her footsteps echoed in time with those of her hunter. Frantic, she dug inside her purse for any weapon. Her fingers closed around the plastic tic-tac box. She flung it over her shoulder to slow her pursuer. Grabbing more articles from her purse, she tossed them on the steps. Keys, lipstick, and coins bounced and clattered on the treads. Above, the cry of someone falling echoed in the stairwell.
Success! She hit the first floor, her feet barely touching the ground. At full throttle, she sprinted for the outside door. Hands outstretched, she pushed down on the release bar.
“Let me out!” She soared through, and her feet slid.
For one terrible moment, she slipped across the granite step. Jozy screamed, anticipating the smack of the pavement. Then, her rubber soles caught and held. Cold fright tightened her chest as she stared at the window in the exterior door. Had anyone followed her? She couldn’t see inside. The killer could be standing in the blackness with a weapon aimed at her heart.
