London, June 3, 1811

Laura Brownell blushed with pleasure and demurely lowered her eyes when she caught Lord Warnock glancing her way across the crowded room at Almack’s. Despite her efforts at politeness, she could not help but to look up again to watch his broad shoulders and the confident way he moved.

He met every greeting with a smile and warm laugh, putting everyone at their ease. As an earl, it was quite unnecessary for him to be so open and kind, and after a Season of weathering haughty glances and arrogance from the peerage, Laura found herself increasingly attracted to Lord Warnock and his obvious lack of conceit.

Unfortunately, she had been unable to place herself in the way of an introduction, no matter how hard she tried.

Her heart pounded as he moved toward her with aching slowness. Half-way across the room he paused to speak to a cluster of men. He turned away from her and faced the dance floor, watching as a quadrille wended its way towards an exhausted conclusion.

He wasn’t coming in her direction, after all. The hope fluttering inside her died.
