Baaam! A door slammed somewhere, echoing off the metal. She wrenched the knob off and stood, shivering.

Nothing.

She climbed out of the shower, wrapped a towel around her and peeked out the door.

A man in jeans and t-shirt stood there. He looked too big for the room and he had a gun in his hand.

“John McGuinn, Crawford County Sheriff,” he barked, holding up a badge. “Step out and identify yourself, ma’am.”

His face was covered with a day’s growth of beard, his dark hair cut cop short, his heavy-muscled body designed to intimidate. He could be thirty-five or forty, but he looked exhausted, with deep lines around his mouth.

“I’m not dressed.”

“I said step out and identify yourself.”

She pulled the towel tighter and obeyed. “My name’s Nikki Seek. I’m here visiting my aunt.”

His eyes traveled slowly down her body and back up to her face. Gritting her teeth, she stood her ground.

“This is Dexter Hunter’s house.” His voice was deep, but not warm. “What are you doing here?”

“My aunt is Dexter’s ex-wife. She’s visiting him for a few days.”

“I’ll need to see some ID.”

What the hell was he doing, keeping her pinned here naked? “Can I get dressed?”

He made a motion for her to pass and she edged by, darting for the bedroom. She yanked on clothes and fished for ID.

When she came out, he still stood where she’d left him in the middle of the room, dominating it. His clothes were stained and wrinkled. They did nothing to hide powerful pecs.
