"I need you, Wade. I need you now. I was so afraid." She moved closer to him and leaned against his chest, her hands splayed over the hard planes. She could feel his heart thumping in his chest. Her fingers tightened.
He grabbed her shoulders and pushed her back, holding her at arm's length. "McKenzie, doesn't this tell you why I have to leave? And why there's no way we can be together? I can't, I won't subject you to a life of danger and uncertainty."
She fisted her hands and pressed them to her chest. "But, Wade, I ... I love you. Doesn't that mean anything to you?"
He smiled gently. "Of course it does, honey. Your love is the most precious gift anyone could ever give me."
"And do you love me, Wade?"
He stroked her cheek. "Yes, McKenzie, I love you, and that's why I must go away. As soon as the cattle drive is over, and I settle the score with Webber, I'll be leaving."
She opened her mouth to protest, but he put a finger to her lips. "I've made my decision, McKenzie."
There was no way McKenzie could stop the flow of tears. With a nod, she opened the door to her room and stepped inside. Closing the door, she leaned against it and gave full vent to her grief. She heard Wade's door shut, and another wave of despair washed over her. With tears streaming down her cheeks, she did as Wade had told her--barricaded the door and sat the washbowl under the window sill. Then she flung herself on the bed and cried herself to sleep.
