“Ignore my mess,” Sherry said. “I was up late. I'm writing a book and can't sleep when a chapter takes off.” She motioned to the couch.

“Really? An author. I'm impressed.” He sat. “What's it about?”

She bit her lip, maybe considering if she should reveal her soul. “About a young girl faced with a debilitating disease and the voices she fights against to find freedom.”

“Very deep.” Nick wondered if in someway it wasn't an autobiography. “So, I should tell you…” He pulled out the paper tucked inside his notebook and handed it to her. “I got an A- on my first quiz. Take a bow.” She snatched it and beamed. “Nick, that's awesome. I'm so proud of you.”

He smiled. “Be proud of yourself . You're an amazing tutor.”

She sat next to him, still examining the paper. “I may shed light on the subject, but you're the one who has to get it.” She met his eyes. “You did good.”

A lump formed in his throat. She's proud of me! He felt drawn to her. The guys thought he was nuts for even hanging around her, but what would they do if they could feel his heart hammering right now? He licked his lips, not saying a thing, yet holding her gaze. A force he'd never felt before lured him. He'd made a deal with God last year not to date anyone he wouldn't consider marrying. So, why did he feel like kissing her?

He shifted his gaze to his backpack. “Well, maybe we should get through another couple of chapters. I have a mid-term next Thursday.”

She cleared her throat and stood. “Would you like anything to drink? I have water, water and hmmm…” She touched her chin. “Oh yeah, and water.”

He laughed. “Water would be great.” Anything to break the tension in the room. Lord, what am I doing? He watched her turn to the fridge. When the guys looked at Sherry, they saw a whale, but Nick beheld an intelligent girl with amazing eyes. He liked being around her.

She handed him a clear blue bottle and sat across from him on the coffee table. “So, where were we?”

Nick swallowed.
